Will a tax extension for renewable energy be voted on before the end of the year, guess where the world’s largest single-building photovoltaic system is going to be built, and which US company has successfully manufactured 1 million LED light bulbs this year.

Senate Tax Credit Could Benefit Energy Industry

A key energy bill was introduced in the Senate concerning an extension of the Treasury Grant Program, which awards developers a 30 percent investment tax credit for their renewable energy project. The American Wind Energy Association and the Solar Energy Industries Association’s efforts have paid off; both groups have been advocating the extension of the bill because it has led to great development of solar and wind projects nationwide. The energy sector is satisfied with the tax credits bill that will keep the industry growing and provide jobs for a number of Americans. If the bill passes, particularly the wind industry will be able to recover and employ more workers.  The bill also includes a one-year extension of a 45-cent ethanol excise tax credit and a 54-cent ethanol import tariff.

Arizona Increases PV Capacity

Arizona could gain an additional 57-MW of photovoltaic capacity as firms reach agreements to develop facilities that can provide greater solar capacity. The Arizona Public Service (APS), one of the state’s utilities has signed contracts for two more plants with a total capacity of 37 megawatts. The company aims to develop 100-MW of PV power plants where a third party, such as SunEdison which is building the newest plants, will develop the facility and APS will operate it. The other 20-MW will come from SunPower and Iberdrola Renewables. The companies have agreed to build a plant in Pinal County where Iberdrola will develop and operate the plant and SunPower will provide the modules, trackers and cabling for the machinery. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2011.

China Plans to build World’s Largest Single-Building PV System

Astronergy is set to build the world’s largest single-building photovoltaic system in China. It will consist of a grid connected 10-MW system that works in tandem with the new Hangzhou East Railway Station. The station serves as a major portal for transportation of all forms—the high-speed railway, subway, buses, and taxis. By integrating the grid-connected power generation into the building’s infrastructure, the project aims to use all the building’s surfaces including the roof. The project is expected to generate almost 10 million kilowatt hours annually.

Lighting Science Group Completes One Million LED Bulbs

Lighting Science Group is the first U.S. company to domestically produce one million LED bulbs in under a year. The company is embracing the challenge of the lighting revolution; it will reveal its millionth bulb to sell under $30 in markets. The bulb is a new, extremely efficient LED A19 bulb that will replace the commonly used 60-watt incandescent. The new design has a higher lumen output and lasts twice as long as the competitor, Phillips’ AmbientLED A19, bulb.

California Makes Plans to Ease Transition for EVs

Electric vehicles have made an attention-grabbing debut this year. With plug-ins arriving at California show-rooms this month, an alliance has formed to create a new plan, “Taking Charge: Establishing California Leadership in the Plug-In Electric Vehicle Marketplace.” The plan calls for about 30 changes that will help integrate plug-ins so that a million hybrid and battery-powered cars are on the road by 2020. The report was introduced at Universal Studios Hollywood, the place where Back to the Future’s electric car was first conceptualized more than two decades ago. Some of the plans highlights include: simplifying the process to get home charging stations installed; developing solutions for apartment and condominium charging; increase consumer demand through education and awareness initiatives; and call for local governments to establish public charging networks.
